An action is a conversion event that is typically tied to the completion of an application, sign-up, or other process. An action occurs when a user completes an action on the advertiser site, such as filling out a lead form, or requesting more information.

Affiliate
An affiliate is a person who does affiliate marketing to earn commissions from companies who have agreed to pay them a percentage of their sales.

Affiliate Marketing
Companies pay you a commission to advertise their products.

Affiliate Marketers
Affiliate marketers run ad campaigns for companies in effort to earn commissions from the sales of products.

Affiliate Network
The middleman between companies and affiliate marketers who makes things more convenient for both parties. An affiliate signs up with the Network then has access to thousands of different products and services with a variety of commission rates. Amazon Affiliate Program
Just about anyone can link to any product on their website and make a small percentage of commission on anything sold.  Amazon give you your own link to advertise, and anyone using that link is tracked, usually via browser cookies, so that sales are credited to the proper affiliate.

Bounty
A flat fee paid by advertisers.

CJ
Abbreviation for "Commission Junction" 

CMS
CMS is the abbreviation for content management system.

Click
If a user sees an ad on your site and clicks it, you receive credit.

Content Marketing
Creating and freely sharing informative content as a means of converting prospects into customers and customers into repeat buyers. The primary goal is to obtain opt-in permission to deliver content via email or other medium over time. Conversion Rate
A conversion rate is the number of transactions or actions divided by the number of clicks. Your conversion rate directly correlates to your campaign's potential for success.

CPC
Cost per click

CPA
CPA or "Cost Per Action" means, advertisers will pay ONLY for a specific designated action.  A more detailed explanation of CPA here.

CTR 
CTR is an acronym for "Click Through Rate". It's a percentage, calculated by taking the number of clicks an ad receives, and divided the the number of displays (or impressions). For example, if you had a CTR of 1%, you'd know that 1% of the people who saw your ad (or bid, or campaign) were enticed enough by it to click through and see where it leads to.   CTR is usually used to measure how effective your ads are, and to get an idea of their impact on an audience.  For example, If you have 1000 impressions and 28 clicks, then you have 2.48% CTR.

CPM
CPM in online advertising means cost per thousand impressions. A more detailed explanation of CTM here. 

DCMA
The DMCA was designed in the late 90's to protect provide hosting services like YouTube from being held liable for users who may post copyrighted material. More on the DCMA

EPC
EPC is the abbreviation for "Earnings Per Click".  EPC is determined by a network by adding the total amount paid to all of an advertiser's publishers and divided by the total clicks over the same period. (Values are multiplied by 100 for display purposes).  Thus, the EPC is an average, but could substantially vary for one affiliate marketers.

Ebay Affiliate Program

Impression
The number of times an ad is displayed on peoples screens.

"Link anchor text" is another way of saying a hyperlinked piece of text.  Anchor text tells search engines what your page is about.  If used well, it can boost your Google search rankings.  Your main page is especially important.


Meta-Description Tag
A meta-description tag is HTML code inside of the <Head> </Head> section of a web page.  In looks like this:  <META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Your descriptive sentence or two goes here.">

Media Buys
A "media buy" is the purchase of advertising space.  Examples: newspapers ads, tv commercials & banner ads on websites...

PageRank
A PageRank an a mathematical algorithm invented by Larry Page, patented by Stanford, and licensed to Google in exchange for 1.8 million shares of Google stock, that determines the importance/weight/value/authority of a hyperlinked set of documents.

PPC:
PPC is the abbreviation for "Pay per click", meaning what you're willing to pay when someone clicks on your link.
