Pinterest and Affiliate Marketing

You might wanna have a seat.

I've been hesitating, neglecting, avoiding this whole new-fangled Pinterest thang - but

*BRAINSTORM*

WHAT IF

"pinned" items were to connect to affiliate links?

Although I do have a Pinterest account, I haven't used it, at all.  I've been highly resistant, despite the epic mounting buzz surrounding the platform.  So last night I decided to check it out.  (Well there wasn't alot of checking, but I  knew it was about "pinboards" so I jumped in).   To my delight, I noticed that you can actually hyperlink the pins!   So off I went -  linking away the cutest, most irresistible products ever known to humankind using my Amazon affiliate links.  (Amazon is such a well known and trusted company, I thought it would make it comfortable for folks to use).   Within an hour of so, my board was shaping up quite nicely.

Then something happened.

Something unexpected.

Something AMAAAAZING.

I happened to click out of the uploading screen to get a snack - and rested on the main page.  And,

"What is this???!"

During the mere amount of time that i had been working (which, I'll add, was around 4:00am ), ALMOST EVERY SINGLE ITEM that I had posted had ALREADY been "repinned" and/or "liked". In addition, my board had, (by no effort of my own - no engaging, no advertising, no solicitation), acquired a number of "followers"....

Mind.

Explosion.

Even a few comments had been left for me.   (COOL!)  One gal inquired as to how she could find such an item?  I gleefully explained that she could just click on the picture!

::SMILE!!!::

So, I'm wondering -  could I be on to something here???

Within a very short time, my Amazon reports told me that there had been 118 click throughs.  And while, there were no conversions,  118 next to my previous ZERO sounded  pretty darn good.

2/11/12 STARDATE ADDENDUM: As of today, I have received a whopping 764 clicks from yesterday's pinboard.  No conversions, but hey, one step at a time.  764 is a considerable improvement from the past few months of ZERO.   I'll take it.

How My Pinterest Page Looks Today

3/1/12  UPDATE: In interest in giving it a fair-shake, and also a full-fledged newly found severe addiction interest in pinning, I've faithfully continued my Pinterest experiment.   In this time, I've created 58 "boards," added 4604 "pins", and "liked" 813 other pins (hoping to relationship build).   Each and every pin (with the exception of a few linked to one of my fun sites), has been an linked to an affiliate Amazon product.  And in this time, what was once intense enthusiasm, has mellowed considerable.  Yes, I've generated a few bucks.  No, it doesn't appear to be a sustainable business model.  It does, however, bode well for using Pinterest as a tool to generate traffic.  The key is making sure that traffic is being directed to something I little more strategic than Amazon.   For a more detailed look, here's my Amazon stats:   In this time, I've created 58 "boards," added 4604 "pins", and "liked" 813 other pins (hoping to relationship build). The key is making sure that traffic is being directed to something a little more strategic than Amazon.
